UGMIT, Rayagada is the only Government run Polytechnic in the undivided Koraput District. It is situated in a very nice environment near the foot of the hills in the eastern side of the Rayagada town covering an area of 2.352 hectors. It is just two Kilometers away from the Rayagada Railway station as well as Bus Stand.
Courses offered
The institution was
started in the year 1979 with a single 3 years Diploma Course in Leather
Technology with an intake capacity of 15 students. The institution has its own
building having a plinth area of 4620 Sq.Mts., Subsequently
the Leather Technology course has been kept in abeyance (stopped) and 3 years
Diploma Courses in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering & Rural
Technology have been introduced in the year 1993 and 1995 respectively with
intake capacity of 20 in each course. Subsequently 3 years Diploma in Civil
Engineering course with intake capacity of 40 has been introduced in place of
Rural Technology in the year 2001 and the intake capacity of the Electronics &
Telecommunication has been increased to 40. At present 3 years Diploma courses
in Electronics & Telecommunication Engg. and Civil Engg with intake capacity of
40 in each course are offered here. There is reservation for Girl students as
per the Government norms.
The Directorate of Technical Education & Training, Orissa, Cuttack conducts the admissions to this institute centrally. The forms are generally sold here just after the announcement of H.S.C. Examination results. The selection is made on the merit list prepared from the H.S.C. results. The reservations of seats are done as per the norms laid down by the Government.
Since last two years Semester pattern of Examinations has been introduced and the evaluation is based on both internal examination for 20 marks and the main exam for 80 marks. The State Council for Technical Education & Vocational Training, Orissa situated near the Governor House, Bhubaneswar, conducts the examinations.
The Institute has sufficient built up area to accommodate both theory & practical classes. The Electronics Department is well equipped with latest equipment in Basic Electronics Laboratory, Digital Electronics & Microprocessor Laboratory, and Communication & Microwave Engg.Laboratory etc.
The Civil Engineering
Department has Hydraulics Laboratory, Testing laboratory etc. The facility of
Computer Lab, Electrical Lab, and Workshop etc are
utilized by all the students. The institute has a good collection of books in
the Library from which the staff & students are allowed to take books and
reading room facility is also available to go through the reference books.
Modern teaching aids like Overhead projector, Slide Projector, and Video
Cassettes with TV & VCR are available to make the teaching more lively and
interesting. A 15 seated Mini Bus is available for the benefit of the students
to go on industrial tours. FAX, XEROX & Internet facilities are available in the
institution. For recreation Games & Sports facilities are provided to the
students.
Two hostels for boys are available which can accommodate about 100 students. The hostel is provided with a telephone and a Colour TV for the benefit of the students. However there is no hostel facility for the Girls.
Other activities
Along with the academic activities Games & sports are encouraged. Students take keen interest in plantations and cleanliness of the campus. Industrial tours are organized for students to the near by industries inside the state and outside the state industrial tour is organized for the final year students.
Another important area of activities is Rural Development under Community Polytechnic Society sponsored by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. Under this one of the faculty member is appointed as Part time Project Engineer and principal monitors the activities as the project Coordinator and the Society has been registered and headed by the Collector & District Magistrate of our District. Need based Socio Economic Surveys are conducted and based on the survey reports different manpower training programmes are conducted at the extension centers to improve the skills of rural people and in turn increase their income. Steps are being taken for the rehabilitation of the trainees through Bank loans etc. to set up their own units for earning, instead of depending on Government jobs. Apart from trainings Activities are undertaken under discimination of information, transfer of technology and support services required for the benefit of rural public.
